The Suburbs – 7th St Entry – Minneapolis MN – July 2nd 2021

Review and photos by Kyle Hansen

It has been 477 days since a show at First Avenue. When I heard that the Suburbs were going to play the entry for First Avenue’s I was more than excited. I wanted to be at the first show back but was not sure what it would be. Very surprised to find out it would be them.

I got down early to meet with friends and have some food and drink at the Depot First Ave’s restaurant right next door. If you have not been in there make sure to take some time and get there early to go to The Depot. The place has a ton of concert posters over the years and a bunch of Dan Corrigan’s photos from over the years. Plus the food is so good. It is a simple menu but I have had everything on it and it is all great food.

I was surprised to find out this was the first shows in the entry from The Suburbs. But as they played the main room right off the bat it makes sense. I figured at some point in time they played there. So a few questions were in my mind before the show. How will the club be? It is sold out will it be that packed? They have a huge PA system how loud will it be? All sorts of stuff going through my head. I met 2 lovely people when I got there and we talked all about all the shows we had seen over the years. As I went in I did see new metal detectors installed in the club. They had security wands before be this makes the club a little more safe. It was not as packed as I expected so that was nice. I have been to sold out show there before and it can get to be quite crowded. My guess is the previous shows were over sold. I got a beer and just headed right up to the stage. It was very open and lots of room. Also coming in we got a copy of the Suburbs new album Poets Party on cd.A very nice touch.

Because I was over enjoying some people I had not seen in a while I missed some of the opener Radiochurch. I did see the last fews songs which seemed to be a mix of r&b and rock. They had a cool sound going on. On the webpage they describe them selves as a soulful pop group. I would have to agree. Check them out here RADIOCHURCH.

Before the Suburbs started Conrad said a speech on how hard everyone has worked for this moment. Keeping the club alive and working so hard on so many projects for stages around the country to help them out. Thank you Dayna, Nate, Ashley, Mike and Sonia.

What would be the first song played after 477 days off. I knew it would be Waiting, as we all have been for this moment. Check out the video below. It was a setlist from all over the years and all the hits thrown in. The band was nice and close on stage since there were 8 people on the stage. If you have never been there it is a smaller stage. The sound was fantastic and seemed to have no problems tonight. I’m sure soundcheck was perfected so this would not happen. The band obviously knew a lot of people in the crowd as they laughed, pointed and just had fun all night long. The new tunes sounded really good. You could definitely tell they were Suburbs songs. Looking forward to checking out the new cd today.  It was a relaxed fun show they had everyone dancing, jumping up and down and just having a good time. If you are going tonight have fun.

Setlist. Waiting – Found a Place – Spring Game – All The Things – Life is Like – Summertime – Ruined the World – Music For Boys – Walk Out – Dish It Up – Social Style Lush – Buckle My Head – His Toy, His Dream – Rattle My Bones – Hobnobbin – Dear Billionaire – Hey Muse – Turn on the Radio – Love is the Law – Hurricanes – Cows
